Product Review: Everyday Minerals Cosmetic Wet Wipes

I’m a really lazy person when it comes to skincare. My mum has been trying to train me into taking good care of my skin since my teens but the habits never really seemed to get hold of me. Now halfway through my twenties, I remember to do the basics but am always looking for shortcuts.

I ordered the cosmetic wet wipes from Everyday Minerals (EDM) some time ago as a friend had recommended them to me. Typically of me, I left them sitting on the shelf for about two months before I got around to using them as I wasn’t putting on much makeup at the time (just mineral powder foundation and blush) due to my newborn and my facial wash seemed to be getting most of the gunk off my face. I recently started going out more though, and so the makeup got a little more comprehensive with eye makeup and concealer.

The Ingredients

Aqua (purified water), aloe barbadensis leaf juice (aloe vera), lavender hydrosol, organic lavender essential oil, organic grapefruit essential oil, extracts of green tea, chamomile extract, phenoxyethonal, potassium sorbate, grapefruit seed extract, citric acid.

The Packaging

The wipes come in a pink and brown soft plastic package, similar to the packaging for travel packs of baby wipes. Each package contains 80 wipes. The wipes are sealed in with a stick-on seal, which works well initially, as my wipes stayed moist even after 2 months of not using them! However, the seal does lose the stickiness after repeated openings and closings, and I found that I had to add sticky tape to it to make sure it stayed closed. I would prefer a pop-top kind of seal. Lugging around the big package may also be inconvenient if you want to freshen up while you’re out. They aren’t going to fit into the cute little handcarried purse.

The Wipes

The wipes are hardy things, with a texture akin to weaved cotton. I had a hard time trying to tear on of them to see how much it would take, and trust me it wasn’t easy at all! The wipes feel good on the skin, but be careful not to scrub them too hard as the wipes, while not being hard at all, aren’t that soft either. I find the scent of the essential oils pleasant and relaxing. The lavender notes stand out especially.

My Use

I’m so glad that I ordered these wipes on my friend’s recommendation. With a baby around, some days I’m just so tired by the time I get to bed that I don’t really want to bother with going through the whole skin care routine. These wipes are a godsend for me on those days. I don’t bother with too much makeup and these wipes are good enough to take off the little makeup that I put on. Since my makeup is mostly mineral, it comes off pretty easily with the wipes, but the heavier department-store foundations aren’t so cooperative. I like that these wipes are affordable at USD3.75 per package from EDM’s online store, but considering that I live in Singapore, the shipping cost is significant and I can’t just order one pack, I have to put together a large order to make the shipping worth it.

Final Decision

These wipes are great! For light makeup, these work well to remove most, if not all, of it. For heavier makeup, these wipes would make a great addition to the makeup removal routine to ensure a cleaner face. I’d definitely order them again if I can get a few of my girlfriends to put together a big order to share out the shipping.

How to Winter-Proof Your Skin

Temperatures just took the first plunge of the season in my area and my skin is definitely noticing the colder air! Dry, flaky, and itchy skin is an uncomfortable side effect to the dropping temperatures. It can be downright miserable. No doubt, you probably notice the ashy look as well- not cute! I have some helpful hints to somewhat “winter-proof” your skin.

The first thing you need to know is that in the winter, the air is drier; therefore it dries your skin out. The heating in our homes can also suck the moisture right out of the skin. The summer months usually bode well to our skin because the humidity in the air keeps the skin supple. So keeping this in mind, we need to “replenish” the moisture.

The first thing you should make sure you are doing is using a body lotion that has humectants. It does not have to be anything expensive. A simple drugstore lotion such as Eucerin or even Vaseline will do the trick. Humectants are actually substances added to cosmetic products that will pull water to the skin and help to keep it there.

Also, be sure you are not taking long showers. It is very tempting to stay in there for twenty minutes or more because it is so warm, but the hot water can actually strip your skin of oil, and this will throw off the natural balance of oil and water in your skin. Try to keep it to five or ten minutes. (An added bonus- you will save money on your utility bills!)

Adding a humidifier to your home can be beneficial for you, or even keeping houseplants in your room. The houseplants can also add some life and cheer up a cold house! Who knew plants could be good for your skin?

Another thing to remember is always wear your sunscreen! You need it just as much in the winter as you do in the summer. Sun damage is the number one cause of all our skin problems (dark spots, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, etc) Even if you are not planning on being outside for long periods of time, incidental sun exposure (i.e. the sun shining through your car window while you drive to work) can do just as much damage. Make sunscreen a daily habit.

Wearing jackets, gloves, scarves and hats is a way to physically guard your skin against the blustery cold winds. Gloves won’t totally protect your hands from being dry and cracked, so be sure to keep them moisturized with an extra rich hand cream. (I like Bath amp; Body Works Glove Me Tender-also has a sunscreen)

Follow these tips and I guarantee your skin will be soft, glowing and ready to take on the winter!!

Best Skin Care Products Recommended for Hyperpigmentation

Dealing with hyperpigmentation can be one of the most frustrating tasks because generally there is very little you can do about it, and the treatments and products available work differently on everyone. In the last several years I have tried several home remedies and beauty products to help minimize the appearance of hyperpigmentation on my skin, but till now there have been few products developed specifically for hyperpigmentation. Like other skin conditions, there are several contributing factors to the appearance of hyperpigmentation on your skin as well as the degree of hyperpigmentation that you might experience. So, it is hard to nail down a single product that will work for you or help prevent it. For those that have darker skin and are prone to hyper pigmented skin when exposed to the sun for long periods of time, go the extra mile to protect your skin and cover up commonly problematic areas. Liberal applications of sun block are also recommended.

Marvel-Mini Rejuvenating Facial Light Therapy, $200
Nothing that I have tried has ever entirely removed the appearance of hyperpigmented skin, but this little beauty tool comes pretty close to doing the job. A couple months of use now and I have put it away till I need it again, as the areas I was using it on are only slightly noticeable to myself when I carefully scrutinize my skin.

The Marvel-Mini basically uses light therapy in the form of LED lights set to a specific wavelength to treat hyperpigmented skin. A similar treatment therapy from a professional will end up costing you ten times more over several treatment sessions. With this device, you can use it whenever you need it year after year and it is super easy and convenient– well worth the price tag.

Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin, $15-60
Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx is a beauty and skin care line that was developed especially for women with darker skin tones. I fell in love with this skin care line the first time I tried it, nothing has made my skin look and feel as healthy as it has using these products which bring out the best in my complexion.

To help deal with hyperpigmentation that women with darker skin tones are naturally prone to, there is the addition of soy and pomegranates in the beauty products. Soy naturally reduces the appearance of hyper pigmentation and pomegranate helps reduce inflammation which is one of the causes of the uneven coloring in skin.

PCA Skin pHaze 13 Pigment Bar, $25
I use this product in addition to the other two products I already mentioned. Before I found Dr. Susan Taylor’s line and the Marvel-Mini it was one of the only products I was using regularly because the moment I stopped the discoloration in my skin from hyperpigmentation because very visible. The pHaze Pigment Bar works because there are salt based lighteners that keep the discoloration from returning to your skin after you use it, only they do not work for very long– especially if you expose yourself to the sun again. When you have nothing else though it is a good product to help reduce any discoloration as long as you use it as recommended. I also advise you to keep your skin well moisturized while using this product because I always felt as if my skin was drier than it needed to be.

Shiseido White Lucency Concentrated Brightening Serum, $100
The Shiseido Serum is more of a target treatment, and it works well, but it only helps once you already have visible discoloration on your skin. I like to keep a tube around to use when I have a couple trouble spots pop up and need results fast. The size of the tube and the ability to just dab some on and blend in also makes it the perfect product to go traveling with me.

Lancome Bright Expert Intense Brightening Cleansing Foam, $33
The Lancome Cleansing Foam is a fairly good product to use as a facial cleaner if that is where you are having problems with uneven skin. The ingredients will help even out your skin tone and reduce any sun spots or darkened skin at the same time. When I use the pHaze pigment bar, I like to use this with it because it also helps moisturize my face and keeps my complexion clear.

Rapid Clear 2-in-1 Fight & Fade Gel by Neutrogena: A Review

Recently, Neutrogena came out with a new product in their skincare line called “Rapid Clear 2-in-1 Fight amp; Fade Gel”. It claims to visibly reduce breakouts and fade away post-acne scars in eight hours. It also claims to speed up the process for its formula to penetrate your pores and get rid of the bacteria that causes pimples. I saw an ad for it in a magazine and I was instantly intrigued. I have suffered with post acne scars from my teenage years and have been endlessly searching for inexpensive possibilities to make them disappear. I have tried so many different products and none seem to work or will state that you have to consistently use it for at least six to eight months for results to actually take effect. Needless to say, I immediately went to the store and picked one of these up. I was somewhat surprised because It came in a relatively small tube (0.5 FL OZ), which I was expecting it to be slightly larger. I did notice on the ingredients label that this product contains salicylic acid and glycolic acid which both have been proven to reduce pimples and fade blemishes caused by acne. It also contains Witch Hazel extract which is a natural remedy that soothes the skin. I decided to wait until right before I would go to bed to apply this on (since I figured it provide ample time for the medicine to work without the hindrance of makeup. So, I applied it and went to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, I did notice a difference! My scars appeared lighter that then they had before and also, I had recently gotten a big pimple on my cheek and after using this the size of the pimple shrunk dramatically.

There are a few drawbacks though. This formula is pretty greasy feeling. It doesn’t dry up immediately after application, so I had to make sure I didn’t touch anything else on my face in fear that I might wipe it off or it would mess up any fabric. Another drawback is that it has coloring in it. I prefer to have any sort of topical medicine (especially for the face) to be as less artificial as possible so i don’t really think that Neutrogena to have to add artificial coloring to this was really necessary. The last drawback is the price. I was a bit surprised by the price when I first picked it up at the store. Luckily, when I went it happened to be on sale, but the normal price is around ten dollars, which is not really cheap if you are looking for an acne remedy that is nice on your budget.

Overall, if you don’t mind spending a little bit extra for something that really does work than go ahead and pick up one of these the next time you go to your local Target or Walmart. However, if you are like me and want to get the best out of your money and the best out of the product you buy then look for this product when it goes on sale and definitely grab one then because it’s definitely worth a shot.

Top Five Philosophy Products

With all the many, many skincare/cosmetic companies out there, how does one choose what products to use? Aside from trial and error – word of mouth and recommendations are always a great way to try new things. Philosophy products, created in 1996 by Cristina Carlino, were introduced to me by a friend – and over the years have continued to use and love their products.

Carlino originally developed a skin care line called biomedic, a medically based skincare line that was used and recommended by doctors and surgeons. Because of the success of biomedic, Carlino went back to the lab to create Philosophy so that similar products could be available to the general public. Hope in a jar was the first product released and has seen enormous success over the years (especially with multiple plugs from Oprah as part of her “favorite things”). Philosophy was created as a “lifestyle brand” and currently offers skincare, cosmetics, fragrance and bath and body products.

It’s hard to narrow down all of their products into a top 5 list – but these are the best of the best – products that everyone can use (great for all skin types) and are affordable.

Purity Made Simple

Purity is a 3-in-1 product that has won many different awards including the 2007 winner of the Best of Sephora. It is light weight with a clean, fresh smell. Purity works as a cleanser, toner, and make-up remover – designed to save you time. Why use three different products when you can use one. Only a small amount of the product is necessary – a nickel size twice a day – so the product lasts a long time. Available in 8oz, 16 oz, and 24 oz bottles. Pricing starts at $20.

Microdelivery Peel

This product, developed to bring the average consumer the opportunity to get the results of microdermabrasion at home. Exfoliation is one of the most important things you can do to keep your skin looking youthful and soft. The amazing thing about Philosophy’s microdelivery peel two step process is that it exfoliates the skin while infusing it with Vitamin C. It also contains peptides to rebuild the skin to improve the skin’s firmness and elasticity, salicylic acid to slough away dead skin, and lactic acid to help exfoliate. The product sells for $65, which is a lot less expensive than many other similar products on the market. Your skin will feel differently immediately after one use.

Body wash/shampoos

Philosophy is known for their variety of “flavors” of their body Shampoo/body wash/bubble bath products. There are so many different scents available, I have only tried about 10 of them – but I haven’t been disappointed yet. (Although the Senorita Margarita makes me crave margaritas all day long). This is also an award winning product that leaves your hair and skin feeling soft and smelling delicious. A few of my favorite scents are Mimosa, Raspberry Sorbet, Cinnamon Buns, and the ever popular Amazing Grace. (The scents are light enough that they won’t overpower you throughout the day). 16oz bottles start at $16.

Hope in a Jar

One of the reasons that Philosophy is so successful – Hope in a Jar – the multiple award winning, Oprah loving moisturizer. This product is chock full of antioxidants, and leaves your skin feeling fresh and moisturized, without feeling too heavy. Hope in a Jar, with beta glucan and lactic acid to help exfoliate and leave the skin with a healthy rosy glow, was designed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, dehydration, and even skin discoloration. The product is truly amazing (available for normal, dry and oily skin types) and starts at only $28 for a 1oz jar. Believe the hype – this one is worth trying.

The Present

Not necessarily one of Philosophy’s best known product – but I think it is amazing. It is a product that evens out skin tone and makes you look like you have flawless skin. It can be worn on its own, or under your make-up. It gives you that “airbrushed appearance.” It can also be worn at night to keep the moisture and any treatment products sealed in. The reason this product works is the main ingredient – dimethicone copolyol (a silicone derivative) which is in many of the make-up base/skin smoothing products on the market. Unfortunately silicone products and my skin don’t get along, so I can’t use The Present. But when I did use it – I loved it. $25 for a 2 oz tube.

Again, it is hard to narrow down the Philosophy line into 5 of their best products – but you won’t be disappointed with these 5.

MD Skincare All Over Blemish Solution: Review

For more than a year whenever I get any blemish, whether it’s a small zit or a humongous pimple I always make sure to apply Clean amp; Clear’s Advantage Acne Spot Treatment in order to treat it. But I always love to try new beauty products, so when I received a sample of MD Skincare’s All Over Blemish Solution, I was all over it and couldn’t wait until I got a new pimple so I could try it out. As if on cue a new pimple sprang up within days of me receiving the MD Skincare sample. The pimple that appeared on my chin was one of those painful red ones that’s under the skin. It was the kind of pimple that takes forever to come to a head so when I applied the All Over Blemish Solution to it I didn’t expect a dramatic result right away.

But a couple of hours went by and when I felt the pimple I was shocked to feel that the soreness had disappeared. So had a lot of the swelling. The bump was still there but the pimple wasn’t red anymore. So basically the MD Skincare All Over Blemish Solution sped up my zit’s healing process by about 2 or 3 days.

Since I had such great results I kept using the All Over Blemish Solution on that pimple for the rest of the week. Unfortunately the blemish never decreased much in size after that first day, and it never came to a head either. So I had a small bump under my skin for about three weeks until it finally came to the surface. When the bump finally surfaced it was back to the size it had been initially. So that pretty much sucked and it defeated the whole purpose of me using the Blemish Solution.

I’ve since used the MD Skincare All Over Blemish Solution on smaller pimples, and it’s been very effective for knocking out redness and pain. It’s also helps to reduce the initial size of most of them by 50% until the pimple heals completely.

I really love how gentle it is. The first ingredient in the Clean amp; Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment is alcohol, it smells like alcohol and when it’s applied to a pimple especially one that has broken skin it burns slightly. But the MD Skincare Blemish Solution has the same feel as Smashbox’s Primer, it feels like Vaseline but without the greasy feel, so it isn’t drying or irritating to the skin.

This product is quite pricey, a 1.7oz. tube costs $84. I would recommend this treatment for anyone who wants to see an immediate difference in large pimples, and wants to prevent them from starting in the first place. I also think the MD Skincare All Over Blemish Solution would be a great acne treatment for those with sensitive skin because it won’t cause any irritation or dry out your skin. But let’s face it if you have normal skin you can get the same results for less than $10 with the Clean and Clear Spot Treatment. I give the Blemish Solution 4 out of 5 stars.

Mario Badescu SkinCare

Mario Badescu skincare products use natural ingredients designed to help your skin look and feel beautiful. Ingredients such as fresh fruits and vegetables, aloe, seaweed, and flowers make these products smell as great as they work!

Mario Badescu’s product line caters to all skin types, meeting the needs of teenagers with acne prone skin to those with sensitive, aging skin. Their staff will help you determine your skin type, whether it be dry, oil, sensitive or any combination of the above. Personally, I have normal/combination skin so the products I use would be suitable for a range of skin types.

In the morning, I wash my face with the Enzyme Cleaning Gel, which is formulated with Papaya Extract and Alpha Hydroxy Acid. This gel cleanser doesn’t foam up on your face; instead it gently exfoliates and cleanses revealing fresher, healthy skin. The cleanser doesn’t contain harsh ingredients that are rough on your skin; in fact, the texture is light and smooth.

I follow the Enzyme Cleanser with a good amount of the Aloe Lotion, which is an extremely mild toner, containing only 2% alcohol. This particular product is good for combination, dry and sensitive skin types, leaving skin feeling deep clean but not with that “stinging” feeling that comes along with so many toners/astringents.

Next, I use a dab of the Hyaluronic Eye Cream, which is ideal for all skin types. I figure it’s really never too early to start using eye cream, and this cream infuses the sensitive skin around the eyes with deep moisture but no oily residue. I follow he eye cream with the Aloe Moisturizer with SPF 15 on the rest of my face. This is the BEST moisturizer ever! It’s feather light and oil-free, so your skin is left feeling soft and not at all greasy. Plus, it’s got SPF built right in!

Before I go to bed, I wash my face again with the Enzyme Cleansing gel followed by another round of both the Aloe Lotion toner and the Hyaluronic Eye Cream. At night, instead of the Aloe Moisturizer, I use the Seaweed Night Cream, which is a nighttime, oil free lotion that’s perfect for dry, sensitive or combination skin.

A couple of times a week, after washing my face, I use either a facial scrub or a facemask. The mask I use is Mario’s Flower and Tonic Mask, perfect for all skin types. It purifies skin, loosening dirt and pore clogging residue that could leave skin irritated and dull. The scrub I use, the Kiwi Face Scrub, is also perfect for all skin types. It’s a sweet smelling combination of Alpha Hydroxy Acids and real kiwi seeds that gently remove dirt that builds up on the surface of skin. After using the facial scrub, my skin glows with freshness!

My skin is now smooth, calm and free of dirt and grime left behind by air particles and make-up. The products all smell great, and they work well together. I don’t know what I’d do without my Mario Badescu skin care regimen.

Beauty Review: American Beauty Line Smoothing Pressed Powder

I recently purchased my first cosmetic item at Kohl’s. While shopping for the normal things I buy at Kohl’s like kids’ clothes and dishtowels, I wandered into the cosmetic section in the front of the store. I found a wide selection of cosmetics by the brand American Beauty.

The American Beauty cosmetic line is manufactured by the well known upscale skincare and fragrance company Estee Lauder. This line was launched in 2004 and American Beauty products are exclusively sold at Kohl’s. It includes skincare (cleansing products), makeup and facial care (wrinkle creams). Ashley Judd is the model for the line. According to a People magazine article about Judd, American Beauty targets the demographic of women aged 25 to 54.

The product I tried was called “Perfect Lighting Line Smoothing Pressed Powder”. I used the color “02 Light”. I paid $16 for the compact of makeup. This price falls between the drugstore brand L’Oréal and the high end brand Estee Lauder. sells a similar L’Oréal brand pressed powder for $10.49 (this was on sale when I checked). On the other hand, Estee Lauder pressed powder compacts range in price from $25 up to $32.50. American Beauty cosmetics are usually not included in the weekly sales at Kohl’s, so the normal everyday price would be $16.

The Line Smoothing Pressed Powder comes in sturdy, white plastic packaging. The stylish container is rectangular and the words “American Beauty” are written in silver. The amount of product included is .28 oz (net weight). It comes with a mirror on the inside of and the applicator is a small rectangular sponge.

According to American Beauty website (, the ingredients of pearls and mica act as a light diffuser, working to soften the look of fine lines and wrinkles. The powder is supposed to set your foundation for longer wear and it claims to have a lightweight formula for medium coverage.

The powder comes in six shades. The shades are: Fair, Light, Light-Medium, Medium, Medium-Deep, and Deep. Since I am fair skinned, I chose the Light shade.

How it Worked

I was pleased with this product. I usually use the L’Oréal brand pressed powder and I recently tried the Physician’s Formula Organics Pressed Powder. I liked the quality of the applicator and how it worked in applying the powder to my face.

I found the color to be perfect for my skin tone. I usually use a liquid foundation first and then use a pressed powder to mat out the shine from the foundation. American Beauty pressed powder stayed on all day and didn’t rub off. I liked the sturdiness of the packaging, since I plan on carrying this in my purse on a daily basis. The container snaps shut, so there’s no chance of the makeup and applicator spilling out.

I recommend American Beauty Line Smoothing Pressed Powder, especially to women who like expensive department store brands of makeup. For half the price of department store compacts, you can get a great product with the same type of fancy packaging.
